Title: One Bedroom Apartment

Author/Editor: Ryan Sheffield

Overall, I’d say this is a pretty decent collection, though I felt that the stories ran the gamut in terms of how arresting they were.

The collection started off really powerfully, though I found each of the subsequent stories less powerful than the first one. “Nashville Cat Man,” the first story, was my favorite of the collection. The loneliness of the characters in that story was really very palpable. The image of a lonely man looking for his lost cat just crushed me, and I completely empathized with them in that moment.

The simplicity and unexplained enigma of the second story work very well in its favor. Sheffield uses a stripped-down style that compliments well the tone of the narrators and the vibe of this setting or universe. I’ll definitely check out his other work, which, like this collection, are available for free download. You can find links to the work from his Goodreads Author page.
